If one
considers the brief history of tourism in Sardinia, Ogliastra is a
fairly recent discovery: Its beautiful coasts and mountainous interior,
were relatively unknown because of the difficulty of access: in fact to
the north and west the area is closed by the Barbagia mountains, that
rise steeply from sea level to over a thousand metres. Only to the south
with the long valley of the River Quirra is there a relatively easy way
in from the Province of Cagliari that is , however, some distance away.
But now many people know and appreciate the countryside of Ogliastra:
the coastal plains with their beautiful beaches; the so called “tacchi”,
imposing towers of light coloured rock, remains of ancient limestone
plateaux excavated by water; the red rocks and the karstic coast of
North Ogliastra.
The
equestrian itineraries will take you along mule tracks used by carbon
burners in the past and sheep tracks used by local shepherds, crossing
some of the most enchanting corners of this ancient land. |
