Urzulei, at the extreme north of Ogliastra, is located some 500 meters
above sea level on a steep slope at the foot of the Supramonte mountain
protected by the huge massif of Monte Gruttas. The territory is an extraordinary
mosaic of natural beauties, an intricate labyrinth of gorges, canyons, dolines, cliffs, sinkholes, furrowed fields, abysses, pinnacles,
fantastic unexplored grottoes, vast forests of evergreen and deciduous
oaks, a wildlife unique in the world.
With
its 500 m high cliffs, the gorge of Gorropu, the deepest canyon
in Europe, meets the eye in all its rugged beauty: a unique natural
sanctuary, attracting thousands of people year round. Scattered on the
territory are many Nuragic villages and giant’s tombs, signs and living
presence of remote times.
The
territory is particularly rich in trees, especially ilexes, cork-oaks,
yews and junipers, as well as Mediterranean bush: arbutus, phillyrea,
broom, heather, etc. In this territory find their habitat some precious
botanical endemism such as the beautiful ofris morisi, the rare
orchis branchiforti, the candid pancrazio illirico and the
better known mountain rose, poenia mascula. In such a
varied territory, many animal species also make their habitat:
wild-boar, moufflons, partridges, hares, wild rabbits, golden eagles, etc.
The
local craftsmen, true born artists, produce beautiful and original
carpets, tapestries, curtains, embroideries, asphodel baskets of various
sizes, pipes, wood sculptures, decorated chopping boards, chests, etc. Old
churches: San Giorgio, dedicated to the patron saint of the
village, S. Giovanni Battista and Sant’Antonio ,all three
constructed round 1600, and San Basilio recently rebuilt at
Mannuri. Expert guides organise conferences, tours for scholars and
school groups, excursions on horseback or on foot and exploration of
caves.
